〈PINK: Published In North Korea〉는 북한에서 ‘출판된 춤’을 발굴해 나가는 예술적 연구이자 퍼포먼스 작업이다. 이 프로젝트는 남한의 안무가 정다슬의 손에 우연히 닿은 북한의 무용 서적 『무용표기법』에서 시작된다. 북한에서 개발한 자모식 무용 표기법의 원리를 담고 있는 책에 대한 연구는 그 표기법으로 쓰인 안무가 담겨 있는 책 『사관장과 전사들』에서 춤을 추출하는 작업으로 확장되고 있다.
『사관장과 전사들』이라는 한 권의 책이자 춤에는 북한의 안무가 홍정화가 창작한 여성 7인의 군무가 분명히 담겨 있다. 모호한 기호에 담긴 명확한 춤을 읽어내는 일은 더디고, 그 춤을 다채로운 남한의 무용수들의 몸에 담아 여기 존재하게 만드는 일은 너무도 지난하다. 사실 우리는 그 춤의 원형을 이미 잃어버렸을지도 모른다. 그럼에도 불구하고 『사관장과 전사들』은 남한의 한 공간에 모습을 드러낼 것이다. 발굴과 복원, 그리고 기호와 신체 사이를 가로지르며 일어나는 책, 혹은 춤.
PINK: Published In North Korea is an ongoing artistic research and performance project that traces and excavates dance “published” in North Korea. The project began when South Korean choreographer Da Soul Chung encountered a North Korean instructional book titled The Chamo System of Dance Notation, which outlines the principles of a uniquely developed system of phonetic notation for encoding movement. What began as a study of this system has since expanded into an attempt to extract choreography from another book: The Commander and the Warriors, a book written entirely in this notation.
This single book—and dance—The Commander and the Warriors contains a group choreography for seven women, created by North Korean choreographer Hong Jeong-hwa. Interpreting precise movement from its ambiguous signs is a meticulous process, and embodying that movement through the diverse bodies of South Korean dancers is even more labor-intensive. Arguably, the original form may already have been lost. Nevertheless, The Commander and the Warriors will manifest—here, in a space in the South. A book, or a dance, brought into appearance through excavation and reconstruction—crossing the thresholds between code and body.
